CONVOCATION ADDRESS OF THE CHIEF GUEST DR.G.SRINIVAS,JOINT SECRETARY, UGC,SOUTHERN REGION, HYDERABAD

HIGHER EDUCAITON AS A MEANS OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT

"Education is a virtual asset for comprehensive development of human beings. It endows an individual with rationality, reason, responsibility and right thinking abilities. Education and Health continue to be critical requirements for growth and Development more essentially in rural areas. It could be understood by various factors such as mass migration of people from rural to urban areas for want of quality education, health care, employment and new opportunities. This trend is further accentuated by dwindling infrastructure and facilities in rural areas. Inclusive Development can be realized only by reversing these critical aspects.

In order to achieve this, we ought to encourage and strengthen rural educational institutions. This single measure will have cascading effect and trigger positive developments. Through the rural institutions we should able to address the following specific areas:

Ø Enhancing the competencies of rural students with global standards

Ø Soft skills development of students.

Ø Reducing pre-dominant agricultural dependence.

Ø Increasing the Health& Hygiene awareness among rural people

The Vivekananda College, Thiruvedakam, Madurai district,TamilNadu has evolved as an unique institution the country. The objective of the institution is simultaneous education of hand, heart and head. It primarily caters to the needs of socio economically dis-advantaged rural population. There is a great emphasis on inculcating spiritual, ethical and moral values among its students.

The institution is fully residential with gurukula mode of life-training. The College is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai,It is a UGC , New Delhi recognized Autonomous institution and re accredited with A Grade by NAAC, Bangalore. The institution is offering vide ranging program options i.e., UG (6), P.G.(4), Research (4), Diploma (4) and Certificate Courses (28). It has a strong Alumni association contributing to the development of institution in various ways.

There is a strong community orientation with several initiatives launched by this college for the development of surrounding villages fostering College-Neighborhood relationship. Brief Resume of Dr.G.Srinivas:

Dr.G.Srinivas is currently the Joint Secretary & Head of South Eastern Regional Office(SERO), Hyderabad of University Grants Commission. Prior to this assignment, he had worked as Registrar, Technology Information Forecasting & Assessment Council of (TIFAC ), New Delhi. He had also worked as Deputy advisor at National Assessment & Accreditation council (NAAC), Bangalore.

Dr. Srinivas is a doctorate in Plant Sciences from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and obtained MHRM from Annamalai University. He was awarded National Scholarship for consistently good academic record. He has publications in National & International Journals in the areas of Environmental Biology and Higher Education policy planning. He is also one of the trained assessors of NAAC, Bangalore and as served as Member of Peer Teams which assessed several Institutions.

UPDATE 3: The Gurukulam reopens for all the P.G. students on the 12th of Feb.2009, Thursday.
The Gurukulam reopens for all the U.G. students on the 16th of Feb.2009, Monday.

UPDATE 2: Jayanthi and Sports Day celebrations - POSTPONED: The college has been closed as per the instructions received from the Govt. of Tamilnadu.Hence the dates of Jayanthi and Sports Day celebrations have been postponed.It will be intimated later in the web.

UPDATE 1: Due to some unavoidable personal reasons our alumnus Mohan Vydianathan is not able to participate as Chief Guest in our Jayanthi and Sports day celebrations held on 13th and 14th February 2009. Also the special alumni meeting planned on the 13th Feb 2009 stands postponed and the dates will be announced shortly. Please keep checking here for the update...

A Special Alumni Meeting has been arranged on 13/02/2009 to discuss various developments and future plans of our association. Our Association has now become a "registered entity" which provides us an endless opportunities to do more to our alma mater. The informal meeting will be held in the evening hours after dinner. The alumnus are requested to stay back overnight. All the necessary stay arrangements will be done by our college.

Resolved to approve the Registration of our Vivekananda College,
Alumni Association as a Society Act Register No. is 105/2008 dt. 26-11-2008.
Resolved to open an “Online Domestic Account at ICICI or State Bank of India or Canara Bank, Sholavandan in the name of VC Alumni Association Account.
Resolved to help the economically poor and academically meritorious students of our college from the Alumni Association fund by giving Rs. 2500/- per student from the academic year 2008-09 onwards for a maximum number of 10 students and the scrutinizing process is made by the following members.

Well, I am attending Alumni meet after a gap of 2 years and lot of improvements had been seen since then. The following are the salient features which was enjoyed by me and would like to share the nostalgic feeling.

In fact, I could not sleep on the 12 Dec 08 Friday night since my mind was hovering around the Alumni meet that was scheduled on 13 Dec 08.
The moment I entered the campus, I could infer the vibrance of the great masters who had taught me in 1971 and as conveyed in the views sharing by Alumni - I was one of the fortunate and blessed student of Swami Chidbhavananda and enjoyed his ex tempo lectures which used to be thought provoking.
It was very nice to note that the function started sharp 10.00 am as scheduled since time management is an important element which need to be adhered to, by every one.
The information shared during the meeting was quite informative. It is also nice to note that our college had provided 40 systems for Internet browse to help the student community which is an excellent step in the right direction.
When I entered the prayer hall (where a total strength of around 1000 nos were present), it was a pin drop silent and the entire prayer hall was reverberating with divine energy which had deepened my prayer and meditation.
The discipline, the way students assemble and dissemble during the prayer needs a special mention. What a Herculean task to maintain such an absolute silence whereas our college is practicing the same right from day one, just like that. A great feeling.
The most touching part for this year's alumni meet is interaction with students from 2.00 pm to 4. 00 pm. Well, I had devoted the entire 2 hours with the B.Sc Physics students along with Prof. Selvarajah. I was delighted to interact with them and my inference is that the students have started using the browsing center and communication workshops. I talked to them on the topic " Communication skills" and its importance for almost 30 min. and the session was highly interactive.
During the session, I also inferred, that many a students are not clear as to what will be the future after completion of the degree and so on. They seem to be afraid of future. Now, it is time for our college to create a counseling session for the final year students wherein each of these students can be counseled according to their desire and taste so that they can leave the college with lot of self confidence and self esteem.
Last but not the least. As soon as I came to office today morning, I browsed through the college website which had been done very well. It is the need of the hour and I sincerely appreciate the old student Mohan Vaidyanathan who had done a wonderful job and also the other team members. This morning, during the prayer time, I sincerely prayed for the good health of Mohan Vaidyanathan who met with an accident in US. Of course, I will be sending a speedy recovery email today since group prayers will give a divine healing.

Gist of our suggestions as expressed by the Alumni:

Teach the students the importance of Ramayanam, Mahabharata and Bhagawad Gita as to how it can be related for the day today life in their personal, inter personal, official, social and spiritual life which will help them as to how to handle crisis management.
Meditation is practiced during the prayer. However, the importance of meditation and the power of silence can be well explained to students so that they can whole heartily benefit the richness of the same.
We will be delighted to have inputs from the college on a regular basis. Hence, you can send news letters either by email or hard copy.
We will try to contact the other Alumni so that we will try to have a, really big team during the next meet in Sep 09.

Any improvements or ideas can be shared through the website so that we can discuss, deliberate and get it through so that we need not have to wait till the next Alumni meet since all these improvement activities need to be dynamic.

Awaiting for the next available opportunity to meet the faculty members and beloved students of our college.
